Summary:
Sunny D positioned itself as a remedy for seasonal sadness, energizing audiences with vibrant, optimistic messaging.
- The Ask: To create a campaign that elevates Sunny D’s brand perception, connecting emotionally with audiences during times of low energy and mood.
- The Challenge/Problem: Gloomy weather and limited sunlight often lead to feelings of sadness and lethargy. Sunny D needed to authentically position itself as a source of positivity and energy.
- The Solution: My team created a campaign focused on uplifting spirits through community activations and messaging that embodied optimism and light, making the product a symbol of joy.
My Roles:
- Strategic Development
- Project Management
- Lead Presenter
Background:
Sunny D, launched as Sunny Delight in 1963 by Doric Foods in Florida, is a citrus-flavored drink that became popular for its tangy taste and affordability. In the 1980s and 1990s, it surged in popularity with energetic ads targeting kids and teens. Rebranded as Sunny D in the early 2000s, it expanded its product range while remaining a nostalgic favorite. Needing to create a buzz, Sunny D was looking for a new vibrant campaign to regionally test that can eventually be implemented nationwide.

What We Found:
- Starting in a localized approach, we noticed the Northwest region of the U.S experience an above average amount of rainy days
- Seattle, Washington, and Portland, Oregon, each only see around 36 inches of rain every year,
- Data suggests that people’s moods are generally affected by rainy weather.
- In a 2020 study, researchers found people were more likely to report symptoms of depression during cloudy or overcast weather.

- Research points out belonging to a community can boost connection with the brand:
- 74% [of consumers] say being a part of a community makes them more likely to trust the brand.
- The use of brand colors and storytelling can leave consumers feeling more connected to the brand and have positive feelings attributed to the brand, as in this case study of Coca-Cola

Insight: it’s physiologically challenging to feel happy when there is a constant lack of sunlight

Strategy: Sunny D is the missing bit of sunshine you need to brighten up gloomy days
Executions:
The campaign was divided into three parts, using playful medical-themed language to position SunnyD as a dose of sunshine. This approach aimed to drive traffic to the SunnyD Pharmacy and boost online engagement with #GreyGoodbye Stories
- Awareness (Medicinal Discovery): Focused on raising brand visibility through contextual ads, posters, social content, and radio/podcasts.

- Activations (Diagnosis & Treatment): Engages consumers with experiential elements like the “Sunny D Pharmacy,” featuring tools like the Gloom-o-Meter, SunnyScript, limited-edition products, and Sunray Therapy.

- Content (Recovery): Builds emotional connection through user-generated content, PR media, and storytelling under “#GreyGoodbye Stories.” and ways to recover at home.

Application:
The campaign aimed to increase brand awareness and deepen emotional connections with audiences. It demonstrated how a beverage could become a symbol of positivity and optimism, resonating with consumers on a more personal level. This emotionally driven brand strategy can be applied to other companies seeking to transform everyday products into meaningful experiences that foster loyalty and long-term engagement
