Background:
Bud Light, introduced by Anheuser-Busch in 1982, is one of the most popular light beers in the United States and a staple in American beer culture. Known for its light, crisp taste and lower calorie count compared to regular beers, Bud Light is a favorite for social gatherings, sports events, and everyday enjoyment. After recent public backlash among hardcore fans, Bud Light has lost its positioning as the top beer in the U.S. Bud Light is looking to position itself back at the top and reconnect with its audience.
Research:
- Using MRI Simmons to find key demographics and build a consumer persona
- Used key findings to shape the persona (consumer profile) named Jack
- Media consumption across traditional media, online behaviors
- Tech-savvy behaviors suggested opportunities in emerging platforms like social media, podcasts, etc.
- Data revealed preferences for country music and strong ties to local identity.

Insight: Consumers value authenticity and meeting them where they are.

Strategy: Become the authentic beer
Proposed Strategies:
Due to low brand index scores for large brands and the preference of Bud Light’s target audience for small, regional brands when it comes to low-calorie domestic beer, there’s a clear opportunity to adjust positioning and strategy. Bud Light is a light flavored lager that can flex to incorporate more regional flavors to compete with local brands and expand its already large market share. This case can be made for Bud Light’s existing flavors and brand extensions.

Results/Applications:
The insights uncovered informed a strategic roadmap for Bud Light to enhance its relevance and authenticity with its target audience. This insight-driven approach can be leveraged by other brands and companies looking to rebuild trust, strengthen cultural resonance, and create more meaningful, values-aligned connections with their audiences at scale.
